CTComputed Tomography (CT) Using a small amount of radiation, a special x-ray machine, and high-tech computers, CT scans take multiple images of internal organs, soft tissue, and other body parts. The CT images have greater detail and clarity than a regular x-ray. CT exams are used in diagnosing and evaluating different cancers and diseases.
The CT machine is a large, circular scanner with a hole in the middle. A moveable table is situated in the middle of the hole which allows the patient to have the precise body part scanned. The x-ray tube and electronic x-ray detectors are located in the ring that is around the patient. The ring moves around the body part being examined and takes multiple pictures in a spiral motion. These thin-sliced images appear on a computer screen that is located outside the scanning room. The CT exam is quick and painless.
The images are then read by our radiologist and a report is sent to your doctor in a timely manner.

The CTA exams are used in diagnosing and evaluating obstructions or enlargements in the blood vessels and arteries that could be dangerous to the patient.

Resource: FAQsCT and CTA FAQs Why do I need to drink contrast? The oral contrast fills the colon for better visualization on the images.
Why do I need the IV contrast? The IV contrast enhances all of the vascular structures on the images (i.e. liver, pancreas, kidneys). It will also characterize potential pathology.
Could I have a reaction to the IV contrast? Yes, but the chances are minimal. It has the same risk for reaction as any medication does, which is why we use contrast screening forms—to flag possible patients who are at risk for having a reaction to the contrast.
Why is a head CT done most frequently without IV? Most pathology can be detected in the brain without IV contrast. If there is suspicion, contrast may be given or an MRI might be suggested for further evaluation.
How long is this exam going to take? Depending on the anatomy being scanned, a CT can take from 5 minutes to 20 minutes.
Is it ok that I take medication(s) the morning of the exam? Yes. Any type of medication is fine to take the morning of your exam. If you take a certain kind of diabetic medication, you may be asked to withhold for 48 hours after the exam.
What is this test going to show? A CT scan is a good way to image and evaluate bones, internal organs, the brain and vascular structures within the neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. CT PrepPatient Preparation for CT Scans CT Head without contrast - 70450 No preparation is required.
